The first successful steam locomotive was built by Richard Trervithick in 1804. As the steam locomotive improved, more railroads started to use them. A steam engine runs by burning coal, wood, or oil in the firebox. The fire in the firebox heats water to create steam. That steam is then forced into the cylinder, moving the piston back and forth. The piston is connected to the driving rod which is connected to the wheels. When the piston moves back and forth, it moves the driving rod which turns the wheels.

The race on August 28, 1830, between Peter Cooper's diminutive Tom Thumb locomotive and the horse-drawn Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad car demonstrated the superiority of steam power. Though the gallant horse won eventually when mechanical failure stopped the locomotive, the Tom Thumb had led the race, rounding curves at 15 miles an hour.

he Erie Canal, which opened between 1821 and 1825, represents one of the best example of canal construction aimed at extending inland transport systems, of foremost importance in the development of the United States. At its completion, it was about 580 km long, 40 feet wide and at least four feet deep. By linking New York to Albany to Buffalo, the Erie Canal initiated a new era of growth for inland freight transportation for East Coast ports. It reduced the cost of moving a ton of flour from Buffalo to New York from $120 to $6.

The 184.5 mile long Chesapeake & Ohio Canal is located along the north bank of the Potomac River, starting in Washington, DC and ending in Cumberland, MD. The canal was built between 1828 and 1850, and it operated sporadically between floods until 1924. In 1954, US Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas organized an eight day hike up the canal's towpath in an effort to save it from being converted to a parkway. His efforts succeeded, and in 1971 the canal became a National Historic Park.

About 1863, the road became a plank road. Plank Roads became immensely popular. Hemlock, pine or oak planks, eight feet long and three to four inches in thickness, were laid across the road at right angles to its length. If laid lengthwise of the road, horses were more liable to slip and the ends would sometimes ride up. If laid obliquely, one end would tend to spring up when the weight of the vehicles pressed unbalanced upon the other end. The planks were put in sleepers, and sand was put on the planks.
